House Panel Subpoenas Organisers Of Jan. 6 Trump Rally
Washington (AP) A House committee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection has subpoenaed 11 officials who were involved in planning rallies in support of former President Donald Trump ahead of the violent attack, including one the day of the siege. The announcement follows a first round of subpoenas last week that targeted former White House and administration officials who were in contact with Trump before and during the insurrection. Mississippi Rep. Bennie Thompson, the chairman of the committee, said in a release that the inquiry includes examination of how various individuals and entities coordinated their activities leading up to the events of January 6. The panel has ramped up its investigation in recent weeks as it attempts to dissect the origins of the insurrection by Trump's supporters and how to prevent it from ever happening again. The Trump loyalists beat and injured police as they battled their way inside the building, destroyed property and sent lawmakers running for their lives. Repeating Trump's lies about widespread election fraud, they interrupted the certification of President Joe Biden's victory and left the U.S. Capitol deeply shaken. (AP) ..

Officials Investigate Fire At Susan B Anthony Home, Museum
New York (AP) Fire officials in Rochester were investigating a fire that damaged the Susan B Anthony Museum & House early Sunday. Firefighters responding to an alarm at approximately 1 am arrived to find the back porch of the museum engulfed in flames. The porch suffered heavy damage, but officials said none of the historical artifacts inside were damaged. The fire department listed the cause of the fire as suspicious. The house, a National Historic Landmark, was built in the mid-18th century and was Anthony's home and also the site of her arrest in 1872 after she cast her ballot in a presidential election. It served as the headquarters of the National American Woman Suffrage Association. Anthony died there in 1906, according to the museum's website. In a statement, Battalion Chief Joseph Luna said, "the Rochester Fire Department has long understood the significance that this property holds both to our local community as well as the nation. A great job was done by the firefighters' tonight in limiting the effects of the fire on both the museum and its displays. (AP) ..

Scientists Develop Sensor To Detect Chemicals Used In High-energy Explosives
Indian scientists have for the first time developed a thermally stable and cost-effective electronic polymer-based sensor for rapidly detecting nitro-aromatic chemicals used in high-energy explosives, the Department of Science and Technology (DST) said on Friday. The detection of explosives without destroying them is essential for protection, and criminal investigations, minefield remediation, military applications, ammunition remediation sites, security applications, and chemical sensors play a vital role in such cases, it said. Explosive poly-nitroaromatic compounds can be analysed usually by sophisticated instrumental techniques. But the requirements for quick decision making in criminology laboratories or reclaimed military sites or to detect explosives in possession of extremists often require simple, cheap, and selective field techniques, which will be non-destructive in nature, the DST said. Non-destructive sensing of nitroaromatic chemicals (NACs) is difficult, it said. While earlier studies are based mostly on photo-luminescent property, detection on the basis of conducting property has not been explored so far, it said. Detection on the basis of conducting property helps in making a handy detection device where results can be seen with the help of LED, the department said.

San Jose (AP) San Jose State University has agreed to pay USD1.6 million to 13 female student-athletes whose complaints about being sexually assaulted by an athletic trainer were mishandled by the university, federal prosecutors have said. The payment is part of a settlement between the university, the US Justice Department's Civil Rights Division and the US Attorney's Office for the Northern District of California, which conducted a Title IX investigation that found the university failed to adequately respond to reports of sexual harassment and assault that started in 2009, exposing additional student-athletes to harm for over a decade..

Disputes Among Countries 'Need To Be Handled Through Dialogue And Cooperation': Xi At UNGA
Amidst escalating tension in ties with the US, Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday said that disputes among countries need to be handled through dialogue and cooperation" and urged world leaders to eschew "confrontation and exclusion." Addressing the high-level 76th UN General assembly, President Xi, via a video link, said that the world needs to advocate peace, development, equity, justice, democracy and freedom, which are the common values of humanity, and reject the practice of forming small circles or zero-sum games. "Differences and problems among countries, hardly avoidable, need to be handled through dialogue and cooperation on the basis of equality and mutual respect. One country's success does not have to mean another country's failure, and the world is big enough to accommodate common development and progress of all countries," he said.

First-ever' Lung Transplantation In West Bengal
West Bengal is set to witness its first lung transplantation after doctors at a private hospital here managed to get the vital organ from a brain-dead patient in Gujarat. The recipient is a senior citizen who was admitted to the facility for over three months, an official said. The surgery started on Monday night and it may take over 14 hours, he said. This will be the first time that lung transplantation is being conducted in the state, a health department official said. The organ of a patient from Gujarat's Surat was flown to the city at around 9.30 pm and was rushed to the hospital in the southern part of the city via a green corridor created for the purpose, he said. According to the hospital authorities, the lungs are being transplanted on a man who was on Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) support for the last 107 days as his lungs were completely damaged. "The ECMO support was also not working well for him and he was required to undergo a transplant. We are hopeful that the old man will get back a new lease of life," the official of the super speciality hospital said.

Visva-Bharati V-C Talks Tough With Teachers Over Thefts In Purported Video, Stokes Controversy
Visva-Bharati University Vice-Chancellor Bidyut Chakraborty courted controversy Saturday when a video circulated on social media purportedly showed him blaming a section of teachers for not doing enough to prevent incidents of theft in different departments of the varsity. In the video of a virtual meeting between the V-C and faculty members held on Friday, a voice resembling that of Chakraborty can be heard telling them of not doing their bit to prevent recent thefts, and trying to pass the buck on security guards, who are reluctant to lodge any FIR fearing the henchmen of a bahubali' (strongman) of Birbhum district. Because of him (bahubali), Visva-Bharati cannot take any foolproof step to boost security. Why have you left it to the VC to flag such issues," said Chakraborty in the video clip.
