Data Shows Pendency of Judicial Cases Leading to Jam-packed Jails, Surge in Undertrials Across States

The number of undertrial prisoners in Indian jails has risen by 21.5 per cent between 2011 and 2016. In 2016, undertrial prisoners accounted for 67.70 per cent or 2,93,058 of the total prisoners in the country.
